Heritage Ales…
The recent revelation that Heritage Ales such as Bass, Boddingtons and Theakston’s Old Peculiar are experiencing a surge in demand possibly speaks volumes about the inferior quality of some of the modern listings. For Craft Brewers this is a terrific opportunity to completely outperform the larger breweries.
For example, back in the day Bass would have been brewed from Plumage Archer, Spratt Archer, Earl and more latterly Proctor barley malt. All these malts would have been made by hand, on floors, and the combination of variety and process would have delivered far more flavour than the commercial malts of today.
Plumage Archer, and Proctor’s offspring, Maris Otter continue to be hand-made. This means if a Craft Brewer chooses to recreate a Heritage Ale that once graced the pubs of their location, it could be far more authentic, and far more successful, than any attempt by the likes of Budweiser to cash in on Britain’s brewing heritage.
…Require Heritage Malts!
hi there. Are there any organic heritage grains available?
Hi Stuart,
Yes indeed, we have Plumage Archer in stock and we also have an organic Maris Otter. If you give the office a ring on 01985 212014, I’m sure they’ll be able to help you.
